What is ERCP?

ERCP is a specialized endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat problems of the bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, and liver. It combines endoscopy and fluoroscopy (real-time X-rays) to identify blockages, stones, strictures, or tumors in the biliary and pancreatic systems.

It is a minimally invasive alternative to surgery in many cases.

When is ERCP Needed?

ERCP is recommended in conditions such as:

  • Bile Duct Stones (Choledocholithiasis)
  • Blockages or Narrowing (Strictures) of the Bile Duct
  • Pancreatic Duct Disorders
  • Biliary or Pancreatic Tumors
  • Cholangitis (Bile Duct Infection)
  • Complications from Gallbladder Surgery
  • Unexplained Jaundice

How ERCP Works

  • A thin, flexible tube (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the stomach and duodenum
  • A contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts
  • X-ray imaging is used to locate abnormalities
If needed, treatment is done during the same session, such as:
  • Removing stones
  • Placing stents
  • Dilating strictures

Benefits of ERCP

  • Minimally invasive — no cuts or stitches
  • Diagnosis and treatment in one procedure
  • Faster recovery than traditional surgery
  • Often performed as a day-care or short-stay procedure
